…, if you will の意味

意味は、so to speak （いわゆる）に代わるもので、ちょっと学がある人達が頻繁に口にする。

でも、何でwillを使っているのにそんな意味になるのか？

「このwill は、助動詞ではなく、want, desire, wishという意味の動詞。」と言っている人もいる。

「'…, if you will' = ‘if you wish it to be so called’, ‘if you choose or prefer to call it so.’（そういう風に呼ばれることがいいと思っている）」と言っている人もいる。

「It means that the speaker acknowledges that his use of the word in this case could be challenged and that he is asking for the listener's indulgence to let him call it that. So yes, it is

short for "if you will indulge me."（もし、私がこう言うのを、みなさんに許容してもらえるなら→言うとしたら、こんな感じかなぁ。）」と言っている人もいる。

私的には、最後の説明が、比較的すっきりするなぁ。

自分で、ある概念を定義するちょうな発言をして、「的確な表現かどうかはわかんないけど、こんな感じ（の表現で）いいかなっ。（とちょっと自信なさげに、謙遜した感じで）」と言いたいときに、”…, if you will,” を使うような気がする。
